Microsoft's redesigned Paint app for Windows 10 looks awesome

Microsoft is building a Windows 10 version of its famous Paint tool. While the software maker has barely updated Paint in recent releases of Windows, the new Paint app will be completely overhauled. Twitter user WalkingCat has discovered video demonstrations of the new app, and it's clearly designed with Windows 10 in mind.

A launch video notes that the new "Paint Preview" app includes all the familiar features of the regular version of Paint, but Microsoft is adding in 3D object support — an ideal addition for HoloLens. Paint Preview users will be able to create 3D objects, and annotate them freely. Microsoft has a range of markers and art tools to help artists create objects, and brushes that can be used directly on 3D objects. All of the tools appear to be pen- and touch-friendly, with an interface that mixes 3D models, 2D images, stickers, and community tools for 3D content.

Apricity: Slip Into Something More Comfortable

Apricity OS a great, two-pronged Linux distro that recently reached a milestone that will ensure its continued success.

Apricity's first public beta, which was GNOME-only, was released more than a year ago. A choice of either the GNOME or Cinnamon desktops later became available in the monthly development snapshot releases.

This rolling release delivery method already provided a pleasant computing experience. Both desktop versions performed well. Each monthly build brought more functionality. I have not experienced any stability issues with the continuing stream of beta releases.

However, you can download something even better than an ongoing series of beta releases: Apricity OS 7.2016 Aspen is the first ever stable release of this distro. Alex Gajewski's development team accomplished this feat with the Aug. 6 release.

Apricity OS is a U.S.-based Arch Linux derivative distro that comes with two well-integrated, trimmed down and simplified desktop versions in 64-bit architecture.

Apricity OS is one of only a few Linux distros that feature the ICE site-specific browser to integrate Web apps into the desktop environment. It offers a unique approach to launching access to favorite online locations without the menu baggage and clutter often displayed in a full Web browser.

BitTorrent Fires CEOs, Closes Los Angeles Studio, Shutters BitTorrent Now (EXCLUSIVE)

BitTorrent has fired its two co-CEOs Robert Delamar and Jeremy Johnson and laid of an unknown number of staffers, Variety has learned from multiple sources. BitTorrent CFO Dipak Joshi has stepped in as interim CEO.
The company is also closing its Los Angeles-based production studio and shuttering its BitTorrent Now video streaming efforts. This comes just months after BitTorrent announced a renewed focus on media under the leadership of Delamar and Johnson.
BitTorrent founder Bram Cohen laid out the changes in an email to staff earlier this week, according to a source, but layoffs apparently began as early as two weeks ago. In addition to being ousted as CEOs, Delamar and Johnson were also removed from the company’s board of directors.
The company had officially announced the appointment of Delamar and Johnson as new co-CEOs in April. At the time, the duo laid out a renewed focus on media production and distribution, which involved the opening of  a new Los Angeles-based production studio.
These efforts culminated in BitTorrent Now, an ad-supported music and video streaming platform that launched in June. BitTorrent Now built on the company’s efforts to strike media distribution deals with independent artists, but didn’t actually use BitTorrent’s P2P technology for streaming.
Insiders now say that the company spent millions of dollars on Now, with one source saying that spending was “out of control.”
This wouldn’t be the first time for BitTorrent to pull the plug on an ambitious and expensive media strategy: Back in 2008, the company shut down its BitTorrent Entertainment Store after spending millions for content from major Hollywood studios.
BitTorrent didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nokia Phone Saves Man's Life by Allegedly Stopping Bullet

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A Nokia feature phone was able to stop a bullet from hitting its owner
  • The bullet got embedded in the Nokia phone itself
  • The incident happened in Afghanistan last week
The Nokia phones of yesteryears have long been considered nearly indestructible, but the new ones aren’t too bad either. A Nokia feature phone is reported to have recently taken a bullet for its owner – literally – and saved his life.
According to a tweet by Microsoft’s General Manager of Core UX for Windows Desktop, Tablet and Phone Peter Skillman, a man in Afghanistan was saved last week after a bullet got stuck in a Nokia phone.
Even though the phone is beyond repair, the man must be thanking his stars - and his phone.
This, of course, is not the first time in recent years that a Nokia phone achieved this feat. In 2014, aNokia Lumia 520 stopped a bullet fired at a Brazilian policeman, though the handset – predictably – got destroyed in the process.
Other smartphones, such as the iPhone 5c and HTC Evo 3D, have also acted as shields to protect their owners from bullets in the past as well. On the other hand, smartphones today are becoming a hazard with their exploding batteries.
On the other hand, smartphones today are becoming a hazard with their exploding batteries. TheSamsung Galaxy Note 7 has been mired in controversy in the past couple of months as the South Korean company acknowledged that the batteries in certain units of the phablet are defective and prone to swelling up or even exploding.
The subsequent recall has affected around 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 units and is said to cost Samsungapproximately $1 billion. An iPhone 7 Plus unit had also exploded in transit less than a week ago, casting a shadow over the much-anticipated launch of the new Apple smartphones.

Yahoo: You Should Delete Your Yahoo Account Right Now

Yahoo: You Should Delete Your Yahoo Account Right Now

The recent time isn’t favourable for Yahoo, in addition to the severe security breaches, the company itself is slowly crumbling and losing the strength that it once had..
A new scandal seems that is now coming, according to the information made public, various sources showing that Yahoo has given access to emails of their customers to the NSA and the FBI.
The information is still not complete and needs further detail, but after 3 internal sources of Yahoo, the company has created and made information available to the NSA and the FBI, in 2015, yes, they gave direct access to their customers’ emails. Yahoo created a secret email scanning tool that worked under the command of U.S. intelligence and NSA officials.
This is the first case known in which an American technology company grants this easy way to access in real time to their customer data, being used only search patterns. So far the only known cases were based on information that was stored and only against if any court order was provided.
With access to this tool, both the NSA and the FBI were able to read, evaluate and get emails from thousands of accounts, without being required any order of a court or a similar entity. The access was secured and could be used at any time, without being given any explanation to Yahoo.
However, the Internet giant has come the public defend and, in a brief statement said that would only comply with the law and the orders that the government had given it.
“Yahoo is a law-abiding company, and complies with the laws of the United States”.
Several other companies, such as Google or Microsoft, were contacted and all denied having received any order or indication to proceed similarly.

Since all the information brought to the public by Edward Snowden, who showed how these agencies operate if the suspicion is increasingly present. Now this type of test situations is the real “threat” if the same information provided by the companies to the intelligence agencies like NSA and the FBI.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Received $18 Million in 2016 Pay

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nadella received about $5.66 million in salary and bonus
  • He also got $12 million as stock award
  • Satya Nadella took over as Microsoft CEO in 2014
  • Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella's reported compensation fell 3.3 percent to $17.7 million (roughly Rs. 117 crores) in the software maker's latest fiscal year ended June 30.
Nadella received about $5.66 million (roughly Rs. 38 crores) in salary and bonus and a $12 million (roughly Rs. 80 crores) stock award, according to a preliminary proxy statement filed Monday. About half of the shares will vest in 2018 if Microsoft achieves targets including revenue, operating income and a number of commercial cloud subscribers - and its stock outperforms 60 percent of companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. The remainder will vest in full by 2019 if he remains on the job.
Microsoft's board moved to tie part of Nadella's annual stock grant to targets and cut back its discretion over cash bonuses after more than a quarter of voting shareholders rejected its executive compensation program at the company's last two annual meetings. In talks with directors, investors voiced concerns about excessive payout limits for bonuses and stock awards, and insufficient disclosure of factors used to evaluate performance, the filing said. Companies in the S&P 500 received on average 91 percent support for their pay programs in 2015, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Pete Wootton, a spokesman for the Redmond, Washington-based company, declined to comment beyond the filing. Microsoft shares increased 15 percent in the 12 months ended June 30, compared with a 1 percent increase in the S&P 500.

Netflix is down this weekend, interrupting our Luke Cage binge (Update: It’s back)

Netflix has gone offline on Saturday afternoon, a day after the company made its new Marvel TV series Luke Cage available to stream.

The outage appears to have started around 3:00PM Eastern time for United States and UK customers. According to a tweet from Netflix’s customer service feed, the company is working to fix the outage. The service does appear to be working on mobile devices and tablets.

There’s no word yet on what caused the outage. This isn’t the first time that the service has gone down under heavy loads: in 2012, the service was unreachable during Christmas eve due to an issue with Amazon Web Services.

Needless to say, everyone looking forward to the weekend to watch Luke Cage is going to have to wait a bit longer, and people aren’t happy about it:

Bengaluru-Based WitWorks Wants to Take on the Apple Watch and Android Wear

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Blink is a smartwatch that is compatible with Android and iOS
  • It runs a custom OS called Marvin thats based on Android 5.1
  • It is expected to be available from November
  • Smartwatches have not really caught on yet. Android Wear devices are rarely seen, and while it’s more common to see an iPhone owner with an Apple Watch, the sales haven’t been impressive. According to one Indian company, the problem isn’t in wearables as a category, but the approach that mobile giants took towards the category.

In Bengaluru’s Koramangala neighbourhood you’ll find plenty of startups, from companies that make Facebook bots to ones that make actual robots. In a co-working space across the road from a coffee shop that’s always overflowing with people making presentations and holding interviews, Gadgets 360 met with Somnath Meher, co-founder and CEO of WitWorks. The company launched as a crowdsourced product design platform, and released a product called Trippy, which lets you connect your old speakers to a Wi-Fi network for wireless streaming.

Since then, WitWorks has pivoted – it’s not a marketplace of ideas anymore, but a product company, Meher says, and its first device, the one that could make or break its future, is a smartwatch called Blink. According to Meher, the company decided that it wanted to build a wearable, and after considering different possibilities, decided on a smartwatch. The Blink is based on Android, but doesn’t use Android Wear – instead it runs on a highly customised version of Android 5.1 that WitWorks is calling Marvin.

“It’s forked from Android 5.1,” says Meher, “but we kept only the kernel and the hardware abstraction layer. We built almost everything else from the ground up. The existing smartwatches just bring the same kind of interaction that you have on the phone, to your wrist, and we felt that you needed to rethink the way people are going to use this device. We had to do something from the ground up.”

Android or iOS: What Do the Gadgets 360 Writers Use, and Why?

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Android has the majority of users today
  • Apple still rules the roost in terms of polish
  • A lot of people find the ability to customise Android phones appealing
Android and iOS now contribute to over 99 percent of all smartphones sold in recent times. This two-horse race is the cause of hour-long debates between the advocates of either clan. While some ardently stand by their platform of choice for years, a few others perpetually keep thinking that the grass is greener on the other side.
Gadgets 360 is run by people, and as individuals we’re bound to have our own preferences. While we don’t let these individual preferences cloud our judgement when it comes to giving all products we come across a fair run, as you would expect, most of us have strong opinions on most things tech, and this extends to our choice of mobile platform. We thought it would be interesting to share these points of view with our readers. So, without further ado, take a look at what the experts think, and why they consider sticking to either iOS or Android.
Rishi Alwani (iOS) — Hardware lasts longer. As if Apple dips its phones in the Lazarus Pit before sending them out to us. To put that into perspective, pre-iOS 10, I moved from a Nexus 6 to an iPhone 5s. Best decision ever. Has lasted longer than most of my other phones. And I go through a lot. Just waiting on the iPhone 6s to get a price drop before buying. Because the hardware lasts ridiculously long, a combination of buying a generation old and discounts makes it feasible in a country like ours where iOS devices are expensive.
Gopal Sathe (Android) — After being one of the BlackBerry Boys, I ended up drafted into the Android Army, but it wasn't because of any particular choice - it's just a lot more affordable than joining the Apple faithful. My tablet (yes, I believe there's room for those in our computing life) is an iPad Pro, and it's the best device I've got. And iPhones are great too - but they're also really expensive. And while there was a big difference between an iPhone and a more affordable Android phone in the past, today the gap has narrowed, and, for me, Apple fails to justify the premium.
Ali Pardiwala (Android) — I'm a loyal Android user not out of love for Android, but more out of a lack of enthusiasm for iOS or any other smartphone operating system. Android may have its flaws, but it's an open system that gives you access to lakhs of apps and services (some of them unique), as well as a diverse set of Google's own services which boost your smartphone's capability at the native level.
At this stage, I'm heavily dependent on Google's cloud services, and the fact that Android's open nature makes it possible for me to buy a device of my choosing when it comes to hardware and software.
Abhinav Lal (Android) — There are several obvious things Android has that are lacking on iOS. These are the ability to customise, a user-accessible file system, and the ability to sideload apps. Another major difference is actually in a way a symptom of the first missing feature – and that is a user interface that is effectively crippled by Apple continuing to stick with a single-button interface. There is no implementation of on-screen navigation options to augment the single button, nor does Apple allow users to install ‘launchers’ or otherwise provide the ability to customise the hardware and software on offer.
Gagan Gupta (Android) — I like iOS on iPad more than iPhone. I expect my smartphone to be quick, customisable to my requirements and with easy file transfer options, and I get none of those with iPhones. I used the iPhone 6S Plus for a considerable amount of time, but I found the lack of Google integration cumbersome. Simple things like not being able to set icons the way you want is a big issue, and the same goes for its inability to give me a homescreen single-touch widget for my podcast player. Even though I don't use voice recognition very often, Google Now works when I ask it a question or ask it to do something. The only thing Siri is good for is sarcasm.

The Indian Startup Scene In 2015 India has now become one of the largest bases for startups in the world after the United States, the United Kingdom, and China.

The Indian Startup Scene In 2015

India has now become one of the largest bases for startups in the world after the United States, the United Kingdom, and China.

It is also the youngest with more than 72 percent of its startups founded by entrepreneurs younger than 35 (no surprise considering the median age of the population in India is 27 years). These two trends are driving a new internet entrepreneurial culture that is increasingly online and increasingly mobile.

According to Nasscom, an industry association for the IT sector in India, more than half of the new businesses launching in the country center on e-commerce, aggregators and consumer services — it’s these businesses that received the lion’s share of the startup funding in 2015.

Here’s a snapshot of the investments that shaped the Indian startups scene in 2015 pulled from CrunchBase and Trak.in.

Tales from a Tesla Model S at 200k miles

Tales from a Tesla Model S at 200k miles
Tesloop’s first vehicle, a Tesla Model S they put into service in July 2015, has reached a new milestone: 200,000 miles on the odometer. Tesloop, you’ll recall, ferries passengers between Los Angeles and Las Vegas in electric Tesla vehicles, making it easy to rack up that many miles in a year. Not many electric cars of any make or model have reached this kind of mileage, so I was curious to find out how the Tesla is holding up.
