Zuckerberg teases a prototype standalone Oculus VR headset

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to the stage today at the Oculus Connect developers conference and showed off a taste of the company’s mobile VR future.

The hallmark feature of the new prototype standalone headset is positional tracking. In a brief demo video, the headset appeared to be a modified Rift with a compute module embedded into the back of the headset. This positional tracking technology allows the headset to understand where it is in physical space and adjust the onscreen content accordingly. With 360 videos, you’re limited to a spherical viewpoint from a fixed point, but with positional tracking enabled you can walk through an experience and see a story from every angle. There’s a reason that plenty of enthusiasts refer to this as the hallmark feature of “real VR.”

Zuckerberg said development is still incredibly early, but that it’s on the product roadmap. Unbelievably the word “affordable” was mentioned at some point.

Positional tracking has previously only been available on the major high-end VR headsets including Oculus’s Rift headset, the HTC Vive and PS VR, but with this announcement Oculus is closing the gap between mobile VR experiences and their high-powered counterparts.

Oculus, which released its Gear VR consumer headset to Samsung Galaxy users this past November, is facing increasingly stiff competition in the mobile VR headset space, particularly from Google, which launched its Daydream View headset earlier this week. It appears that rather than smartphone mobile VR, Oculus is looking at a standalone strategy.

Oculus has developed a strong presence in the mobile VR space, largely from major initiatives on the part of Samsung and mobile carriers to provide the headset free alongside purchases of compatible Samsung devices. The company reported in May that there were over one million monthly active users on the platform though this was directly after Samsung shipped a headset with every S7 pre-order so it’s unclear what those numbers look like now after consumers have had a chance to exhaust the available VR content on the device.

Positional tracking on mobile is a technology that’s long been available but the key for Oculus has been ensuring that it doesn’t kill your battery immediately. This is something that Oculus CTO John Carmack has talked about very passionately.

It appears that the company was either unable to get positional tracking tech where it needed to be for mobile VR’s power consumption needs or it is conceding to Google and focusing on owning the next platform hardware.

There were no details given a potential launch date but it would behoove Oculus to get this one out quickly.

Facebook has a tiny, speedy new messaging app designed for owners of older Android phones.

Facebook Messenger Lite, announced Monday, takes up a much smaller amount of a phone's storage -- just 10 megabytes -- than the full-fat app that most users have installed on their phones, and it has been pared back so that it runs peppily over slower-than-average networks. It is the companion app to Facebook Lite, a stripped-down version of the social network, also for old Android phones, launched in 2015.

The app's launch is one cog in the machinery of Facebook's plan to make the social network and the internet as a whole more accessible to people in the developing world. One of Facebook's stated aims is to bring the next 3 billion people online and it has a number of initiatives to that end, including Internet.org, Free Basics and its Lite apps.

Facebook launches Marketplace, a friendlier Craigslist

450 million people already visit “buy and sell” Groups on Facebook each month, and now the company is launching a whole tab in its app dedicated to peer-to-peer shopping.

Facebook Marketplace lets you browse a relevancy-sorted feed of things to buy from people who live nearby, and quickly list your own stuff for sale. Integration with Facebook Messenger lets you haggle or arrange a meet-up, and you know more about who you’re dealing with than on anonymous sites like Craigslist thanks to Facebook’s profiles.

Marketplace is launching today in the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand on mobile, but could roll out globally and on the web if it’s popular. There’s an unfortunate lack of a two-way rating system which helps discourage scamming and bad behavior. There’s also no native checkout option for transactions beyond ad-hoc payment through Messenger, which is annoying but promotes in-person exchanges instead of fraud-laden shipping.

“I think the prevalence of Craigslist shows there’s a great need for a local commerce product” said Marketplace product manager Bowen Pan.

While there’s no Pages allowed on Marketplace right now, Facebook could one day generate ad revenue if it let businesses or people buy News Feed ads or sponsored placement for what they’re selling. Pan tells TechCrunch, “After we’re confident we’ve built out a great product experience for people, we’ll look into introducing businesses if it makes sense, and after that we’ll look at how we could potentially monetize the surface.”

Facebook is betting big on Marketplace, considering its taking over a main spot in the navigation tab bar, replacing the Messenger shortcut in Facebook for iOS. That prime location could make Marketplace the digital version of impulse buys at the checkout counter.

Facebook “Messenger Day” is the chat app’s new Snapchat Stories clone

Facebook is stealing the Stories format and invading countries where Snapchat isn’t popular yet. Today in Poland it launched “Messenger Day”, which lets people share illustrated filter-enhanced photos and videos that disappear in 24 hours, just like on Snapchat.

By using the international popularity of Messenger to spread the Stories format, Facebook could boost retention and return visits to its chat app while becoming the primary place where people post off-the-cuff lifecasting content before they get hooked on Snapchat.

Sources in Poland spotted Messenger Day and sent TechCrunch’s John Biggs these screenshots. We reached out to Facebook for comment, and it told us “We know that people come to Messenger to share everyday moments with friends and family. In Poland we are running a small test of new ways for people to share those updates visually. We have nothing more to announce at this time.”

Additionally, Facebook says it frequently runs small tests before rolling products out to other regions, but there’s no guarantee it will expand this feature beyond Poland. It’s unclear, but Facebook might not bring it to the US unless it really blows up abroad. 60 million people in the US and Canada already use Snapchat daily, and aggressively pushing Messenger Day there could annoy them. But in countries where people aren’t that familiar with Snapchat, it has nothing to lose by experimenting.

But now the social network has announced that the company has developed a Windows version of its osquery tool, too.

Facebook Flaws Are Being Highlighted But Mark Zuckerberg Remains Silent

Facebook has had its powerful position in the global media landscape debated from time to time. However, whenever such discussions are held, one important party is always missing – Mark Zuckerberg himself.

Why is Mark Zuckerberg, an individual who is now more powerful than most state leaders, always silent in such matters?

In one of the latest confrontations Zuckerberg and his Facebook have had to deal with, Aftenpost sought to stop Facebook from censoring a photo taken from the documentary, The Terror of war.

This they did successfully, but the victory was symbolic in nature. It represented what so many other people would like Facebook to see but they don’t. The image was not showing nudity, but the terrors of wall.

The other part involved pushing Facebook to engage in a discussion about its powerful position in the global distribution of news and content. This was a successful objective as well, and perhaps the best part is that the debate was international.

But the most notable characteristic of this issue is the lack of participation from Facebook. Of course, they issue statements on certain issues, and these are always read by news men and women.

However, that cannot be considered as real participation. In some places, like Scandinavia, Facebook has gone to the extent of hiring a PR firm to handle media queries.

The other mission involved getting Mark Zuckerberg, the man himself, to personally jump into the debate and address the issues raised. This has for now been a futile endeavour.

But the silence was to be expected. Facebook does not consider itself to be a media company but a mere technological platform. But that is merely a case of appearances. In the actual sense, it is not a natural player as could have been seen from its blocking of the Terror of War.

Most people in the world consider Facebook to be the internet itself. There are currently over 1 billion people that actively use the social media platform on a daily basis.

Whenever such people visit other websites, they usually use Facebook to do so. Although not all Media companies publish content to Facebook, readers use the platform to share and interact with it. This then renders Facebook a media company, or at least a major gateway for all media companies to their readers.

Facebook may be considered a friend and foe to the people as far as its power in the global media scene goes. There is need for it to engage in this debate, but this will only happen if Mark wants it.

Facebook Apologises for Disabling Palestinian Journalists’ Accounts

Facebook has apologised for disabling accounts of several Palestinian journalists and activists, saying “the pages were removed in error and restored as soon as we were able to investigate”.
An anti-Facebook campaign was launched after the social networking giant deleted the accounts of Palestinian journalists and several publications last weekend, TRTWorld reported on Monday.
“Our team processes millions of reports each week, and we sometimes get things wrong. We’re very sorry about this mistake,” a Facebook spokesperson told Al Arabiya English.
The Facebook action sparked anger among Palestinian activists and bloggers who began an online campaign, urging the users not to post anything on Facebook.
“We demand the Facebook administration to further clarify the mechanisms implementing agreements between Facebook administration and States, including this agreement and to announce the conditions allowing Facebook administration to violate personal freedoms of internet users, and to enter into agreements with regimes and authorities to restrict these freedoms,” the statement from the online campaign read.
According to the campaign organisers, the Facebook move was linked to a pact wherein Facebook bowed under pressure by the Israeli government to rein in content that, Israel feels, incites violence.
The users were also asked to protest on the micro-blogging site Twitter under the hashtag #fbCensorsPalestine.

Researchers managed to prove that as long as someone has a phone number of the target, then they can certainly take control of the person’s Facebook account. Through the SS7 network, hackers can enter your Facebook account without any problems. As long as they know how to exploit the SS7 flaw and remember this flaw has nothing to do with Facebook but an issue with the so-called Signaling System Number 7.

The SS7 flaw has been discovered to be a pathway for many hacking attempts, ranging from listening in on phone calls to sending and receiving text messages. But the latest revelation is that it can also be used for hijacking social media accounts which have a phone number provided on them. The Signaling System Number 7, SS7 in short, is a signaling protocol being used by 800 telecom operators worldwide as their tool of exchanging information amongst themselves. Information such as cross-carrier billing, roaming enablement and other features all work through SS7.

The one problem with SS7, however, is that it trusts all messages sent to it without checking the origin. Therefore, hackers can simply divert any messages or calls from the SS7 network to their own devices by simply tricking it. All that is needed for this technique to work is the victim’s phone number, and they can start their snooping.

Recently, it has been revealed that messenger apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram which promote the end-to-end encryption can still be hacked because they use phone numbers to register people. And now it is Facebook which can be hacked.

Hackers simply have to go to the “Forgot Account?” link on the Facebook page. When they are asked about any phone number or email to retrieve their lost password from, the hackers would have to put a legitimate phone number. After this, the SS7 flaw comes into play, and the hackers can divert the message containing the one-time password received to their own devices, and after that, they can log into the victim’s Facebook account.

Hacker Shows How to Hack Any Facebook Page; Earns $16k as Bug Bounty

EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW HOW TO HACK A FACEBOOK PAGE OR AN ACCOUNT BUT NO ONE WANTS TO DO THE HARD WORK — HERE’S AN INDIAN HACKER WHO FOUND A CRITICAL SECURITY FLAW IN FACEBOOK BUSINESS MANAGER ALLOWING HIM TO HACK ANY FACEBOOK PAGE WITHIN 10 SECONDS.

Arun Sureshkumar, an Indian IT security researcher exposed a critical vulnerability in Facebook business manager allowing attackers to take over any Facebook page – In return Facebook awarded Sureshkumar with 16,000 USD as part of the bug bounty program.

The issue discovered by hacker revolves around Insecure Direct Object Reference, also called IDOR. It refers to when a reference to an internal implementation object, such as a file or database key, is exposed to users without any other access control. In such cases, the attacker can manipulate those references to get access to unauthorized data. In Facebook’s case, IDOR vulnerability in Facebook Business Manager allowed him to take over any Facebook page in less than 10 seconds.

Business Manager actually lets businesses share and control access to their ad accounts, Pages, and other assets on Facebook. Anyone on a business page can see all of the Pages and ad accounts they work on in one place, without sharing login information or being connected to their coworkers on Facebook.

The researcher also mentioned that an attacker could even take over pages like Bill Gates, Narendra Modi , Barack Obama and do whatever kind of damage desired including deleting these pages.

Sureshkumar’s findings:

Sureshkumar made two Facebook business accounts, one as his own and the other for testing purposes. He then added a partner using his own ID and intercepted the request using Burp Suite. After that, he changed the parent business ID with agency ID and asset ID with the page ID he wanted to hack. Once done with changing IDs, the researcher requested manager role on the page.

In few seconds, Sureshkumar had admin rights on the target page thus allowing him to perform the actions he wanted through the business manager.
